Tom Butts, Safety Director

Q: Tell us about your journey at Hunter Truck and your experience in the industry.

A: Since joining Hunter Truck in 2012 as a Human Resources Business Partner, my role has progressively shifted to focus on safety. Initially, that transition began when I started leading the Safety Committee. As the company expanded, it became clear that a full-time Safety Director was essential. At that time, Hunter Truck relied heavily on outside contractors to support our safety efforts, but we recognized there was a need for a more comprehensive and consistent approach to protect our employees.

My commitment to safety began long before my time here. I grew up with a father who was a firefighter, which instilled a strong respect for first responders and risk management in me. That foundation only deepened during my service in the U.S. Navy, where I led major firefighting teams aboard the USS Reuben James for four years. After leaving the Navy, I continued serving as a volunteer firefighter, further reinforcing my love and dedication to keeping people safe.

When the opportunity arose to focus solely on safety, it felt like a natural progression that I wholeheartedly embraced. While pursuing a college degree at the time, I shifted my major, and in June 2024, proudly earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A: I truly love what I do, and there are so many rewarding aspects to choose from. Knowing that my work helps keep people safe, not just at work but in their everyday lives, is incredibly meaningful to me. If I had to choose one aspect that stands out the most, it would have to be training others in First Aid, CPR, and the use of AEDs.

There’s nothing more powerful than receiving a call from someone you trained, thanking you for the knowledge that gave them the ability to jump in and help save a life in a moment of crisis. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to hear stories from individuals who’ve stepped in to help during heart attacks, strokes, overdoses, and choking incidents. Each of those calls reminds me why this work matters so deeply and why I’m so passionate about it.

A: We have an incredible team here at Hunter Truck. I truly valued the time I’ve spent here building strong relationships with so many dedicated individuals over the years. The connection, commitment, and professionalism of our team are second to none, and I genuinely couldn’t imagine working alongside a better group of people.

Q: Tell us about the safety department and your team.

A: At Hunter Truck, the Safety Team is an integral part of the Human Resources department. The entire HR team is made up of caring and dedicated professionals who take their responsibility to support our employees very seriously. The HR focus is always on providing help where it’s needed most to ensure our team members feel supported and valued.

Q: What should customers know when it comes to on the road safety?

A:Check tires daily, the hot weather increases tire pressure and blowout risk. Inspect inflation and tread. Monitor coolant levels – prevent overheating by keeping radiator and engine coolants within safe ranges. You should test A/C systems and ensure the air conditioner works properly to avoid heat stress. It’s important to stay hydrated and be sure to drink water regularly; limit caffeine and energy drinks. Rest in cool areas and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spots. Check the forecast – stay alert for sudden summer storms. Lastly, Plan for delays, you can expect more traffic and construction; build in extra time.

Q: If you could share your most important safety tip with customers, what would it be?

A:Distracted driving is a growing epidemic, and it’s up to all of us to take responsibility and prevent its devastating consequences from affecting ourselves or our loved ones. Distractions come in many forms. Everything from texting, phone use, loud music, and even GPS directions can cause momentary lapses in attention. At 55mph, you will cover almost the entire length of a football field in the time it takes to check one text message. Whether you’re behind the wheel or a passenger, it’s essential to stay alert and speak up if someone is driving distracted. We all play a role in keeping our roads safe.

Q: How has your experience in the industry and at Hunter Truck helped you become the leader that you are today?

A: Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some truly influential leaders. The greatest lesson they’ve taught me is that real leadership is about empowering and supporting your team in their efforts. A strong leader helps create the conditions for their team to succeed. When each individual thrives, the entire organization succeeds together.
